If you’ve ever read magazines like Vigilate, Vigilate, and The Robb Report, you’ve probably skimmed across the pages in awe of Europe. watches with fascinating mechanical complications that include a subdial that shows the sun during the day and the moon at night. Such moon phase watches come from renowned watchmakers such as Patek Philippe, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Roger Dubois, De Bethune, and Blancpain. However, you don’t have to pay thousands or tens of thousands of dollars to see the sun and moon on your watch. Fossil offers a brand-new luxury watch with a street movement that looks like a million bucks for a whole lot less. ZR15557. The Relic website calls it the Relic Silver Stainless Steel Multifunction Men’s Watch and the Kohl’s website calls it the Relic Steel Moon Phase Watch.
However, whether you like the Moon Phase or the Multifunction title, the Relic ZR15557 Model is beautiful with perfect proportions for business and formal occasions. The sleeve fits easily under the shirt. The stainless steel case is a slim 9 millimeters thick and an impressive 41 millimeters in diameter. The watch is water resistant to 100 feet. This relic features three subdials indicating the day of the week, day and day or night. During the day, the golden round on the sun at 6 o’clock on the subdial rises and the moon rises at night. The subdial at 3 o’clock indicates the day and the subdial at 9 o’clock indicates the day of the week. These are very cool features for a watch that costs between $50 and $70.
The face is a simple watch. The silver color is almost white with a luminous hashmark at each hour. The small black numbers 1 by 12 divided by the small black hashmarks indicate the hour tilt between the watch face and the crystal glass. The hour and minute hands are shiny black metal and the second hand is a thin contrast. Inboard hour hashmarks, the watch is precisely stacked to achieve a high end look. The sculpted surface reminded me of something I’d see in a Towson Benzinger Classic.
Of course, the relics of the high art of the world do not reach the elite observers. There are a few minor flaws with this watch. I first found the Relic Silver Stainless Steel to fit my wrist perfectly. Otherwise I would like to have links through the jewelers. The buckles are not adjustable. Second, the font used for the subdial markings is small and can be difficult to read. Third, the moon and sun could be a little bigger and brighter. Finally, this also watches in a dress that does not have illumination or backlight. The disadvantages of this watch pale in comparison to the quantity it delivers.
While I would much rather have the American Towson Gold Moon-Phase Chronograph “Masterpiece,” the Relic Silver Men’s Stainless Steel Multifunction Watch will do in the long, long, meantime. Overall, I would recommend this Moon Phase watch as an interesting and appropriate addition to any watch collection. The show is great.
