Maine offers many opportunities for residents to work as a commercial driver. Applicants who obtain a commercial license from Maine can drive large trucks, vans and similar commercial motor vehicles. An applicant must first pass the Maine CDL exam in order to obtain a CDL permit from the Maine BMV. The license allows applicants to obtain a Maine CDL license and drive on the highways and with a licensed commercial driver. After receiving the training, the practitioner then returns to the BMV to take hands-on skills and take an exam. The applicant eventually receives a full Maine CDL license upon completion of the hands-on test and medical examination.
Step 1:
Go to your local Maine BMV and get a copy of your Maine CDL manual. You can also access it online at Maine.gov/sos/bmv/licenses/MaineCommercialManual.pdf. This “Maine Commercial Driver’s License Manual” will give you the knowledge you need to take the written (scientific) portion of the Maine CDL test.
The material you study depends on the type of vehicle you want to drive as a commercial driver. For example, some people only extract hazardous materials. You must take a HAZMAT certification test to drive such a vehicle. Similarly, you may want to take the driver-bus and school-bus sections to become a licensed Louisiana school bus driver.
Step 2:
Go to your local Maine BMV and pick up a CDL application. Then you send letters with the following address to be written from the science experiment:
Secretary of State
Motor vehicle
State House Station 29
Attn: CDL Examination Section
Augusta Maine 04333
Show up at the time and place assigned for your exam. You will receive a Maine CDL permit if you pass the test.
Step 3:
Explore well for Maine CDL training. Examples include after-school and gym programs schools or private teachers. For example, Greyhound has a free CDL training program for its commercial drivers. If you want to be a truck driver and you don’t have options for employer employment, you can find CDL truck driver training schools certified by the Professional Driver Institute Truck Visit Ptdi.org/schools/schools.aspx for a list of Northern schools with PTDI-certified programs.
Step 4:
Complete CDL training. This is important because now you will have hands-on skills and experience driving. For this proof of concept, you must send a request form (to be obtained from your local BMV in Maine) to the address listed above. Then you will have the nomination information.
Note that your vehicle must be supplied for testing. Talk to your employer or another training provider to arrange to use a commercial vehicle for testing.
Step 5:
Get your Maine CDL license. The BMV will issue a license after you pass your CDL proficiency test.
Notes:
1, You must pass a medical exam to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Ask the BMV about this process.
2. HAZMAT drivers must pass background-checks. This is a federal requirement that applies to all states.
