Neosporin Original to the Rescue

Neosporin Original Ointment is by Johnson & Johnson and is a triple antibiotic topical ointment that we have kept in our home for years. Now our children keep it in their homes.

The original ointment was first offered for retail sale in June 1954.

I am one to always get cuts, hang nails, you name it. Neosporin has helped heal those wounds and clear up infections quickly. I also have a tendency to get infections from hang nails, or those wonderful occasional adult pimples that end up getting infected. Years ago my index finger was infected from a hang nail so I called my pharmacist and asked him what to use to draw the infection out. He told me to use Neosporin with a band-aid to keep the ointment in the area of the infection. Well I figured why not give it a try. I was raised to use a sewing needle heated on the stove till it is red and then proceed to poke it in where the infection is, this would draw out the infection. (Please do not do use this method at home as it can make an infection worse).

Well this time that form of treatment that I got from my mother did not work, it only got worse. So I pulled out my Neosporin, what was I to lose from trying it. I washed my hands real good and especially the infected index finger, and applied the ointment and band-aid. I changed the band-aid and ointment several times during the day, and put the last one with the ointment before going to bed. When I woke up in the morning quite a bit of the redness and soreness was gone. The feeling of my finger being hot and throbbing was no longer there. So I continued to use the Neosporin and bandages for 2 more days and by this time the infection was gone and there was no more need for treatment.

As we live on a farm I always have extra tubes of Neosporin on hand, one for the barn, house, purse and each car. You never know when you are going to need it. My son burnt his foot with hot water, they gave me all the sterile bandages and ointment, and said when that was finished to use the Neosporin as it has a triple antibiotic. He healed nicely. My daughter punctured her leg in the barn, we first had to go to the emergency room to have the puncture wound irrigated and stitches put in. The doctor took the stitches out 1 week later. No sooner did he have them out my daughter bumped her leg and the wound reopened. There was nothing else to do but use the Neosporin and band-aids until the wound healed from the inside out.

We have also used the Neosporin Ointment for Infantigo. The doctor said since it was at the opening of the nose to apply it with the tip and then squeeze the nostrils together lightly to spread the ointment around. This would clear up in 2 to 4 days, depending how bad the case of Infantigo was. We recently have been using the Neosporin Original for my husband’s shingles now that his prescription is done. It helps keep the scabbed areas from getting real stiff and pulling on his neck.

The tube has a elongated tip so you can apply just what you need. I purchase the 1/2 ounce tube for around $4.00.
