Vicks VapoRub is marketed as a menthol soothing ointment that helps alleviate symptoms of cough and congestion. This menthol ointment has helped some individuals alleviate fungus of the toenails, tennis elbow, sinus headaches, skin tagsare, and the dry skin on the fingers/heels.
Over the years, alternative ways of using Vicks VapoRub have been discovered by individuals, they are not endorsed by Vicks.
Active Ingredients
Individuals have found that Vicks VapoRub’s active ingredients provide relief for medical conditions unrelated to chest congestion and coughing. The camphor, menthol and eucalyptus oil mixture of the Vicks VapoRub salve provides healing properties in several areas. Camphor is the ingredient that provides a cooling sensation when applied to the skin. Menthol provides a local anesthetic that helps to relieve minor aches and pains. Eucalyptus oil provides a helping hand in nasal and chest congestion relief. Another ingredient of Vicks VapoRub is the antiseptic that helps to keep germs away from the infected area.
Normal Usage
As advertised by Vicks, Vicks VapoRub should be placed on the chest of an individual who is coughing or is suffering from congestion from a cold or the flu. Vicks warns to be careful using the product on children under the age of 12. Vicks VaporRub should not be used on children under the age of 2.
Some individuals have found that instead of placing the Vicks VapoRub on the chest for congestion, it may be placed on the soles of the feet.

Toenail fungus is difficult to eliminate. Some individuals have had success placing Vicks VapoRub on their toenails. Rub the Vicks VapoRub onto the toenails before retiring to bed in the evening. When using the Vicks Vapor Rub to eliminate toenail fungus, the toenails will turn dark which is the death of the fungus. The nails will return to normal color.
Rubbing Vicks VapoRub onto an elbow suffering from tennis elbow will help to alleviate the pain. The Camphor and Menthol combination provides a cooling and healing sensation to other muscle aches throughout the body. Several applications of the Vicks VapoRub will need to be administered if the muscles still ache.
Dry Skin Moisturizer
Vicks VapoRub may be placed on severely dried areas of skin. Apply the salve generously and rub it in. Repeat the process until the areas are moist.
Vicks VapoRub provides relief for some sinus headaches. Placing a small amount of salve under the nose provides an aroma that helps to alleviate the pounding from a sinus headache. The menthol provides a soothing aroma which helps to calm the headache.
Skin Tagsare
For those individuals not familiar with skin tagsare, it is basically a benign tumor or abnormal growth of skin. They form like small moles that extend from the body in abnormal shapes. They appear most commonly on the face, armpits and upper chest are and groin. Women have more of a tendency of getting skin tags as they increase with pregnancy, age, obesity and diabetes. Men and children may have skin tags also.
Skin tagsare has been known to disappear by applying Vicks VapoRub to the area for a two to three week time period. The larger the skin tagsare the longer the salve will need to be used.
