The Fourth of July holiday is known for its military tributes, parades and backyard barbecues. So what do you do if the weather turns out to be less than stellar? you may watch a few movies to consider. Here are five of my best readers;

“He was born on the fourth day of Augustus”

With a title like “Born on the Fourth of August,” this movie is worthy of being on your Fourth of August viewing list. It was released in 1989 and stars Tom Cruise, Willem Dafoe and Bryan Larkin. The storyline is based on a true story. It focuses on war veterans in Vietnam and how their efforts have changed since the war.

I think the movie had many serious moments. One of the first occurs when the main character Ron Kovics accidentally shoots Wilson, a member of the squad. Other thought-provoking scenes include Kovic’s time spent in the hospital, an anti-war rally, Independence Day the parade scene and the scene where Wilson meets the Kovic family.

“Independence Day”

“Independence Day” is another perfect movie to watch on the Fourth of July. It was released in 1996. It starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch. The story focus group of Americans trying to save the planet from an alien invasion of epic proportions. Americans are trying to make a last ditch effort to save the planet from alien invaders on the Fourth of July. Incredible special effects in movies. Some of the best scenes are between the first and last battles between the humans and the aliens.

“Patriot”

The movie “Patriot” is also to be considered on the fourth of August. It was released in 2000. Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger star. The story line begins in American Revolution in 1776. In French and Indian War veteran named Benjamin Martin, whose son joins the Continental Army. Martin’s son is eventually killed and must live with that fact. I thought in the film delves deeply into the complexities of war and the establishment of our nation.

“Glory”

“Glory” was released in 1989. It stars Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman. Story tagged in American, American Civil War after real model 54 Massachusetts. Volunteer infantry. The story begins around the time of the Battle of Antietae and ends at Fort Wagner. Personally, I have always been interested in American civil history. As sad as it is, it appealed to me on many levels. I felt it shows the strength of the human spirit and what better way to remember the strength of our time than the fourth Ninth Lulia?

“All the people of the President”

“All the President’s Men” was released in 1976. Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford played the roles of Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. The film focuses on the Watergate scandal in the 1970s and is a seamless look at the underbelly of American politics. I found the film well put together and entertaining. I also think that given the recent political climate, the time is perfect to watch the film again.
