… “Should I bake a pie????” . they say
What is free rice like?
The free rice is round, about 8 inches in diameter (with 9 ears) and 7 inches long. As such, there is not much against the space. It is black and white. Add another two inches of height if a steamer basket is used. The urn has no inner surface. Also included are a steamer basket, a white basket, a flexible scoop, a measuring cup, and an instruction booklet. The electrical cord is about three feet long.
The palm-sized instruction booklet has only 15 pages, and another 15 pages in Spanish. The Spanish pages are typed upside down, so you’ll need to stand on your head to read them, amigos.
What do you use?
First, measure the desired amount of rice, keeping in mind the careful measuring cup (which is not really a “cup” in volume) 2 1/4 cups cooked rice Put it in the inner pot. Add the water to the pot, using the markings of the rice on the inside of the pot. That is, if one cooks 2 cups of rice, add water in the number 2 line. an urn Then, simply place the inner pot inside the rice cooker, put the lid on top and plug in the appliance. The “cook” light will automatically turn on and your rice will begin to cook. Cooked Rice knows when your rice is perfectly cooked (don’t ask me how it knows. It just knows!) and will automatically switch to “hot” mode at that time. You’ll know this is done by the orange “warming” light.
How long does it take to cook the rice?
Surprisingly, the instruction manual doesn’t do this at all, except to mention that brown rice takes longer than white rice. We estimate that a pot of white rice should cook for about 20 minutes; The brown rice took considerably longer, maybe 35-40 minutes.
Tell us about the accessories:
The steamer basket is very light and appears to be made of thin aluminum. It fits between the rice pot and the lid to allow the vegetables (or other foods) to steam while the rice cooks. A wide, round coffee spatula is a tool that makes quick work of serving rice without scratching the nonstick cooktop surface. A rice measuring “cup” actually holds 3/4 of a standard cup of rice. The plastic is thin, translucent, very similar to the plastic dispenser/lids on top laundry detergent. It is marked on the fourth part of the “rice cup”. It is important to remember that the labels on free rice refer to the measurements of “rice” from the included measuring cup, and not the standard 8 oz. cups Forgetting the details of that important error in the rice to water ratio. You really don’t want to lose the included measuring cup, though if you do, remember that it holds 6 oz of rice (3/4 cup).
What about cleaning?
The inner jar that contains the rice has no surface that is easy to clean with a quick wipe with soapy water. After two years of sporadic use, the nonstick surface is still in its original shape, and nothing has ever been close to burning or difficult to clean. They also wipe off what was needed outside of the application of washing-up water. The glossy lid sometimes requires a little lighter scrubbing, but it’s not difficult at all. Washing issues are not safe.
What about all the great health warnings:
So rest assured, they are all there for a delightful read. Do not use the unit on a gas or electric burner or in an oven. Unplug the cord when the instrument is not in use. Abstain from children, care and unseemly spouses. You know the exercise.
Receive and most information:
The instruction manual lists 8 recipes, including: Grits with Ham and Cheddar, Salmon with Lemon Marinade with Coconut Rice and Warm Cinnamon Applesauce. My experience with this free rice:
It’s a free breakfast for the first time, and I’m happy about it. I recently made dinner for guests from out of town. It was very uncertain at what time they would come. By preparing the rice in this rice cooker, I knew I could serve them perfectly heated and perfectly cooked rice, no matter when they arrived. I also love being able to throw in rice and water, plug in the rice and go do something else. It’s easy, without the mind of cooking, just a matter of busy people, like working with makeup. We need not worry about the burning for a certain time; don’t worry about the rice burning or sticking. And it’s so easy to clean. It also seems to fill my house with a great fragrance. I love the smell of basmati rice the most.
The earphones stay cool to the touch. The unit gets hot outside, but not dangerously hot. The lid gets hot, although the lid cools the handle.
Sometimes I add too little water. This results in a stickier rice. It may also result in some steamy rice water oozing out of the hole in the lid. When this happens, simply place a folded paper towel on the countertop under the hole to catch the condensed water. . No big deal.
After two years of occasional use, the rice cooker looks and functions like it’s still brand new. I’m a happy camper…er…free.
Any objections?
Yes, I have a few quibbles;
My biggest complaint is the cheap measuring cups. The engravings are just translucent on the cup and are hard for my aging eyes to read. Even the measuring cup looks like it can be easily broken, yet mine still remains intact. I also wish there was an on/off switch instead of having to plug and unplug the unit every now and then, but that seems to be a common complaint with these devices. Finally, I prefer healthy, brown rice that tastes like the nutritional goodness of white rice, but I can’t really fault that stove.
So you made a unit to bake a cake?
No, but a quick Google search actually shows several lists of rice cake and recipes. Who knew?
