Filmmaking Crew Breakdown – Assistant Makeup Artists

One day I was wandering throughout the filmmaking section of my local bookstore. Typically, I find this portion of the store to be inspiring and encouraging as the countless books about acting are filled with stories and tips that do nothing but enhance my ability while working; however, on this particular day, I noticed a disturbing trend. The majority of filmmaking books only discussed the art of acting, and not the other vital aspects of working as a film actor, such as understanding the dynamics and positions within a film set.

While you will work with a variety of professionals, the assistant makeup assistants will quickly become familiar faces as you’ll see them at the beginning and end of each work day.

Primary Responsibilities

Far too many actors confuse assistant makeup artists for the key makeup artist. While the basic job function of each of these professionals is similar, there is a very wide distinction between these two artists. Key makeup artists are the “managers” or “foreman” for the makeup department. This artist outlines and implements the primary makeup designs for all cast.

Assistant makeup artists are responsible for carefully reviewing the key makeup artists designs, and literally assist in the application of makeup. Typically, supporting actors are handled by assistant makeup artists while lead actors are dealt with by the key makeup artist; however, this is not a rule set in stone.

Assistant makeup artists are the professionals who apply makeup to featured extras, or if there is a large cast of background actors that require makeup these are the artists who will carry out the designs by the key makeup artist.

When I first started off in the industry, I quickly learned that making friends with the assistant makeup artists help the brutally early mornings go by easier as these professionals often have stories and experiences that would make any gossip-nut crazy. Basically, treat assistant makeup artists with respect and you’ll have a wonderful experience, and may even make some new friends.
