How to Make an Inexpensive Headboard

If you have been to a furniture store recently, you have seen that a good sized bed will cost you at least $800. Most of the time, the bed will cost more. I am here to tell you that you can make a headboard that is unique. Your bed will be one of a kind with you hand made headboard.

Materials needed:

2 sheets of plywood – exact same size
Wood Trim (enough to frame the ply wood sheets)
Velour Fabric
Batting
Staple Gun
Nail gun
Wood Staples
Wood Screws
Screwdriver (power)
Scissors

How to make the headboard:

I will start out by telling you that the size of the wood that you need depends on the size bed you have. Measure the length of your bed. This is the minimum width that your hand made headboard should be.

One of your sheets of plywood is going to be the backing for your headboard. The other piece of plywood is going to be cut up in squares.

Place the wood trim around the edges of the plywood backing on the second piece of your headboard that will be eventually cut up. Make sure the trim is on the headboard because you will have to attach it to the main part of your headboard at the end. Mark where the trim goes with a marker or pencil. Using a saw, cut the margins off the second piece of plywood.

Take the piece of plywood with the margins cut off and cut it in to nine equal squares or rectangles. This is going to be the backing of the decorative portion of your headboard.

Take the batting and cut pieces that are long enough to cover each piece of the nine rectangles plus come over the edge about an inch and a half. Once you cut one piece, you can use that as a template for the eight other pieces as your nine pieces of wood should be the same.

Take your velour fabric. I would like to use nine different colors within the same color family. For instance, I would like my headboard to have nine different shades of purple or blue. Using the batting as a template, cut squares of velour fabric.

Take the batting and the velour fabric and using your staple gun, wrap the velour and batting around the wood squares similar to a Christmas present. Pull the batting and velour fabric taut over the wood pieces, staple the batting and velour fabric to the wood. You are making some great color blocks for your hand made budget headboard.

When all your nine squares are completed, arrange them on the headboard piece. Make sure you leave the required margin so that you can put the wood frame around your headboard. Once you have them arranged, take a screw and through the back of the headboard secure the pieces of wood one at a time to your headboard. This step will be a lot easier with two people.

Once the nine color blocks are secured on the headboard, you can put the trim on. Screw the trim in from the back so that you cannot see the holes created by the screws.

Voila! You have a great velour color block budget headboard that is one of a kind!

If you’re in to seasonal decorating, you can make a spring headboard using pastel colors. You can make a summer headboard using bright colors such as pink, purple, and lime green. You can make a fall headboard using burnt oranges and browns. You can also make a Christmas headboard using reds, greens, and golds. Finally, you can make a winter headboard using light colors and white.

The possibilities are endless for this creative budget headboard. This headboard is one of a kind, and you won’t be able to find them in stores.
