Starved Rock took its name from an ancient war between two Native American nations, the Foxes and the Illinwek, who had been at war with each other for years. According to the story, the Fox finally got the upper hand and drove Illinwek into a butte, which established the unmistakable mark of Starved Rock, surrounded the tribe, keeping them there until Illinwek finally starved to death.
