Joint pain can be intolerable and it often overtakes us just after middle age. While some joint problems are caused by arthritis, there are certain actions you can take now to prevent having difficulties later on. Let’s take a look.

Weight can play a big part in causing joint pain, particularly in those weight-bearing areas like hips, knees and ankles. The best way to prevent this problem is to maintain a healthy weight. If you are already overweight, it might be worth talking to your doctor about losing some. Exercise and a healthy diet can do wonders for preventing hip problems when you are older.

Eating fish, which is high in omega-3, can help your joints as well. The all-important omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce joint pain and stiffness in people suffering from arthritis. It can’t hurt to start early. If you aren’t a big fan of fish, try taking fish oil supplements instead.

Having a strong, healthy skeletal system is key to avoiding joint issues. Avoid osteoporosis (most common in women) by getting plenty of calcium. Dairy products and leafy green vegetables are full of this mineral which builds bone density and makes them less susceptible to arthritis. You can also take calcium supplements. And avoid caffeine, since it can actually weaken your bone structure.

Get your vitamin C. Drinking orange juice or eating citrus fruits is a great way to boost your intake of this tissue-repairing vitamin. Since a lot of joint pain is caused by damaged muscles, taking plenty of vitamin C could be the ideal way to speed recovery.

Exercise is yet another way to improve your chances of making it to old age without joint pain. Obviously, certain types of exercise are more likely to cause problems in the joints. Anything that involves jarring movements could cause problems later on.

However, regular exercise, like hiking, swimming or even simply walking, can be very good for your body. It helps keep your weight down, too, another plus which will pay off in joint mobility. If you find yourself already suffering from joint problems, swimming is one of the best ways to stay active, without damaging anything.

What you wear on your feet is also important. High heels and shoes that have worn down in areas of the sole can be damaging to your joints. In the short term, you might look good, but in the long term, you will suffer! Aim for shoes that give enough support and that are flexible so the shoe bends with your foot as you walk.

You can do other types of exercise as well, such as martial arts (go for Tai Chi if you already suffer from pain), mild bodybuilding, and the like.

Joint pain can often be prevented or at least lessened by taking action ahead of time. If you are already suffering, it isn’t too late. Talk to your doctor about starting a gentle exercise program, losing some weight or taking a vitamin supplement to help.
