There’s nothing like a Submarine sandwich when hunger strikes and you want to get your mouth around a great tasting sandwich… Yes, there are many sub-chains out there, Subway’s and Quizmo’s come to mind and they aren’t bad at all. On the other hand, I actually enjoy a few from their menu, but they don’t compare to the little spot that has been in my neighborhood for as long as I can remember.
Located across the street from Miami Community College, Hungry Bear has been feeding basketball kids and neighbors, both residents and local businesses for over 20 years.
There is a small hole in the world, only for take-out, with barely standing room for customers and a small grill / sandwich space behind the counter . They don’t even have a board, all the boards are written on boards and backboards, where there is space on the walls…
They hire collage kids to work there, and most of them are very pleasant and helpful in making suggestions.
All subs in subs from whole or white or breads are made from whole wheat and you put your choice in order.
New items are added frequently so every time I go in there I think I want something in particular, I usually end up changing my mind to try one of the new specials.
The servings are always plentiful, and they never skimp on the meats or cheeses like some chains do.
For example, one of my favorite sandwiches is Ham and Melted Cheese, they are very generous with both ingredients in this one, and I add whatever toppings I want, so I usually get it all the way, (keep hot pipes and Mayo)… But on this last visit, I was ready to order the aforementioned sandwich when I noticed a new addition, the Reuben. Sub… Now I like Reuben Sandwiches as it is, so I decided to go for it… corned beef a> they used It was very lean and the melted cheese was bubbling over it.. I didn’t have any other toppings, except for the thousand islands I drank and drank the taste of Reuben.
My hubby had the Chicken on whole wheat which had Romaine lettuce, sliced almonds and dried cranberries. .it was also really delicious.
Another special offer that we tried was the chicken Fajita/Taco, with onions, green peppers, sour cream, salsa, cheddar and the usual lettuce and tomato …. this is really yummy under then.
Another thing we love is the Oriental Chicken with Romana, sliced almonds and crushed almonds. I like the yellow peppers in this one. Sweet yet spicy at the same time
They have so many characteristics, it is not easy to name them all, but I will name a few good old signs, Cham and Cheese, still my favorite, two types of steak with onions or mushrooms, to choose barbeque or steak sauce, always choose cheeses, whether Swiss, American or Provolone.
They also have at least 6 types of turkey and different meat subs, all with different toppings, and quite a variety of chicken including Caesar Chicken and California Chicken, with , something they did not do until this month.
