The Dark Crystal is Jim Henson at his… well, darkest. But aside from the pun, this is also Henson’s most visually spectacular and brilliant work of the modern era. The artist world has created an amalgamation of styles in this movie, creating a world. that is no less terrible.
It is a beautiful piece of intrigue dark fantasy, the forces of good and evil clashing with each other in form. humanoid animals, four-armed demons, vulture-like demons, giant crustaceans. The chosen member of the exterminated race must go to distant lands to healing title Crystal, which is broken. A thousand years ago, the world was divided into two nations. This chick is top notch, especially with the main character Jen, who is also very human. Jen’seye movement, facial expressions, and emotions are so spot-on that they are almost one inch from the real screen.
More than ever before, Henson’s puppet team was able to craft strong characters out of cloth, rubber, and wire. The two symbols of the Dark Crystal are the ever malevolent ogres and the gloriously different evil skeksis. The ogre is magnificently ugly, a mass of gray flesh and a bitter disposition that leads Jen on a quest to find the piece to heal the dark crystal. From the ever-faithful Frank Oz, it’s a positive joy to watch on the screen when he is shot with insults and cryptic riddles. The Skeksis are the perfect villains. Deformed, cunning, cruel, they care for nothing but their alien domination and the hope of eternal life< /a>.
The sets are lavish, and densely packed with little additions that give lust and substance to Henson’s world. That’s right. It’s a whole fantasy world, built from the ground up, with special attention to every plant, flower, and odd creature. White-eyed servants crawl across the dark halls of Skeksi’s castle and monstrous insects crawl through a dynamic landscape of swamps, deserts, and caverns. The results are nothing short of brilliant and show that Henson is not only the creator of the Muppets, but a master of creative imagination.
With The Dark Crystal, Henson has made something utterly believable out of incredible elements. In this way the vision of an alien thing becomes perfectly attractive, but in its own way.
