Sit in the proper yogic position in padhmasana with both thumbs of your hands touching the first finger of each hand, and both hands resting on each knee. Close your eyes and try to concentrate on slow and deep breaths. Around 4/5 as long breaths will prepare you to start the actual practice of pranayama. Contract the inner muscles of your esophagus as much as you can. Then forcefully breathe strongly through both nostrils and reach the contracted throat muscles. When air passes through these contracted throat muscles, a hissing sound comes out of the throat. do not hold your breath inside at first. After about two weeks of pranayama, the practice of this pranayama will begin, holding the breath inside as much as possible. While holding your breath, also exercise Moola bandha and Jalandhar bandha to your capacity. Moola bandha is done by pulling the part of your perineum between the penis and anus up to the maximum and holding it in the same position for as long as possible. Jalandhar bandha is done by touching your chin to the pit of the neck by bending the neck. The reason for doing these bandhas has been explained by me in previous articles. Then slowly exhale through the left nostril only by closing the nostril with the thumb of the right hand. Repeat this exercise as much as you can. In the beginning, try to limit it to 5 times maximum. Then gradually increase it to a maximum of about 15 times over a period of about 2 months. Try to minimize this exercise in the high summer, as this is a heat producing exercise. However, it is possible that winter is at its peak season.

This is a stress generating pranayama and can be practiced after kapalbhati pranayama for maximum benefit. Initially, it is difficult for a person to practice this pranayama as throat muscle contraction may occur after a few days of practice. Pranayama will bring maximum benefits once you achieve maximum contraction of the throat muscles. Asthma patients should practice this pranayama very slowly without both bandhas. This type of pranayama is special and should be practiced especially by thyroid patients. It is not necessary for all persons to practice this pranayama in a row. But they can practice this pranayama once a week to reap its benefits. This pranayama can also be done while sitting on a chair or even in a sleeping position if there is a physical limitation of a person. But make sure that you fill your stomach completely in the morning hours.

When such effective and easy solutions are available to us to treat major diseases like thyroid, why should we try harmful allopathic medicines which have serious side effect? My readers contact me in case they have any doubt in this pranayama.
