In a recent article I wrote reviewing another Trader Joe’s product, jcorn asked for my opinion on Trader Joe’s Steelcut Oatmeal.
I had tried Joe’s Steelcut Oatmeal once before, but it had been a while, so I needed to try it again.
What does “Steelcut” mean?
At first I wondered what steel meant for him.
A quick search on Wikipedia reveals that it is a ‘whole graindoli (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which is broken into just two or three parts are cut. They are also known as coarse oats, or Irish oats. Apparently, the availability of steelcut instant oats is very high, because he used to cook one and move it for a long time in a hot stove before he could enjoy it in a bowl.
I also think that “steelcut” means that they are healthier than the usual seasoned instant oatmeal that you usually eat. Probably even more expensive!
Oatmeal What?
I found Trader Joe’s Steelcut Oatmeal in the frozen food section. He entered the box, which was sealed with two sealed plastic tub packages. Brown sugar flavored with Maple Syrup. Cook them by placing the contents of the bag in a microwave safe bowl and microwaving for 2 – 3 minutes hanging in your microwave, stirring again and microwaving for another minute or so if necessary.

At first glance, $1.99 seems rather expensive for only 2 packages. However, these packets contain 2 hefty 8oz servings, filling a large bowl, unlike those smaller packets of instant oatmeal. These tubes actually fill you up until lunch time.
When I picked up a freshly cooked bowl from the microwave, and looked at the contents, I was hard pressed to start “medicating” it. I resisted the temptation to provide a true, pure, pure, and honest taste experience with oatmeal.
The flavor was mild, but I could detect a slight brown sugar and maple flavor. This meets the specific taste requirement for healthy food. The texture is also a bit different than my usual oats, which I like to cook until it’s thick with almost no liquid left in the pot. I found myself eating a lot more slowly from the large rice like pieces of oatmeal floating in the other, somewhat light texture. I was careful to chew and slowly keep the food inside my mouth. This was absolutely wrong. Eating more slowly makes one fill up faster, and I found myself chewing more slowly and more carefully.
In the second trial, I doctored oatmeal. I wanted to make it healthy by just adding a pinch of salt, dried peaches, and a spot of margarine. I would have added my own brown sugar, but I was out of it. The oatmeal was a little sweeter this time.
I remember, I would probably buy Trader Joe’s Steelcut Oatmeal again simply for the health and safety benefits. In addition to instant oatmeal packages rolled oats are instant, but they often forget about using them for breakfast porridge. I would be more likely to grab one of these frozen jars and add the usual ingredients to it for a healthy quick breakfast meal a>. I also feel good about the nutrition oatmeal. In sodium and fat low in sodium and but high in protein and This would probably be the healthiest meal of my day, but not the most delicious.
Well, > jcorn so, now tell me how you feel about Trader Joe’s Steelcut Oatmeal?
